CLAW 2000
3rd International Controlled Language Applications Workshop
Location:
Westin Hotel in Seattle, Washington, USADates: 29-30 April 2000
CONTEXT:
The 3rd International Workshop on Controlled Language Applications (CLAW) is planned to be held 29-30 April 2000 as a 2-day co-located conference with the
ANLP (Applied Natural Language Processing)/ NAACL (North American Chapter of Association for Computational Linguistics) in Seattle, Washington, USA at the Westin Hotel. Both of the first two CLAWs, held at the University of Leuven in 1996 (CLAW96) and Carnegie Mellon University in 1998 (CLAW98), were successful events in the field. Initial industrial development and deployment of Controlled English languages and systems (AECMA SE, Caterpillar's CTE, Boeing SE Checker, SMART MAXit Checker) have been followed by developments in other languages (for example, Scania Swedish, GIFAS Rationalised French, Controlled German at IAI and DFKI of the University of Saarbruecken, etc).On the research front, we are grappling with issues like standardization, design, and evaluation of controlled language systems. On implementation issues, we are particularly interested in studies regarding author productivity and document usability. The workshop will give equal emphasis to the academic, corporate and industrial perspectives, while bringing together researchers, developers, users, and potential users of controlled language systems from around the world.
WORKSHOP FORMAT:
The two-day workshop will feature paper presentations, poster sessions, panel discussions, and system demonstrations. Dr. Corinne Moore is the invited guest speaker and will give a presentation on the Controlled Language project at Diebold Inc. Paper presentations will each consist of 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions and discussion. The final versions of accepted papers as well as the position statements of panel session participants will be published in the CLAW2000 proceedings that will be distributed at the workshop and are included in the registration fee.
TOPICS OF INTEREST:
Of interest are all topics relating to the design, implementation and application of controlled languages, including but not limited to: human communication protocols; controlled text authoring; conformance checking systems; controlled language authoring aids; machine translation; memory-based translation authoring and translation; issues in Controlled Language design; industrial experience and evolving requirements; quality and usability evaluations of controlled language.
