The SREP laboratory is devoted to developping new free radical probes to take advantage of their intriguing physical and chemical properties. The scope of our research encompasses the synthesis of nitroxides and nitrones as free radical spin traps. The presence of an unpaired electron is at the origin of the paramagnetic nature of these molecules that are studied by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. In the past, the peculiar properties of the unpaired electron carried out by the aminoxyl function led to numerous applications in a broad range of research fields. We believe that by fine tuning the molecular and supramolecular structures of these radicals, current limitations can be overcome and new functions can be reached. The ultimate goal of our research consists of discovering new structures and functions and implementing nitroxides into new devices in which the magnetic nature of the free radical can be controlled for advanced applications as for example in (i) spin trapping, (ii) spin probing, (iii) spin labeling and (iv) dynamic nuclear polarization.
